Making Room…. Clearing Space

What my garden REALLY taught me about life

I had a quiet moment in my garden this week that had me proving a friend right - a friend that once told me that I have the uncanny ability to either turn anything into a joke, or make it unexpectedly deep!

Well, this one of the latter moments. It was a simple moment in the garden that turned into a life lesson I won't be forgetting anytime soon. So, naturally, I'm sharing it with you. Because what is this life without a little unexpected depth?

So… My lemongrass had grown wild — so much so that it was shading everything around it. If you know your lemongrass, you know that this is actually a beautiful sight to behold when you step out of the door into your garden. Nothing makes me feel like an accomplished vegetable gardener than seeing those long thin lush green lemongrass blades sway in the breeze on a windy day.

I finally trimmed back the lemongrass, and as I stepped away, I saw something I hadn't noticed before:

🍃 My bell peppers were fruiting.

🥒 Three large cucumbers were already growing.

🍅 Tomatoes were ripening.

All hidden beneath the overgrowth.

It made me pause. And I wondered how much longer I would have gone not knowing…. how those vegetables hidden behind would have ripened, over-ripened and been rendered useless to me…. how much more goodness there was hiding behind the good-looking and very useful lemongrass plants.

Sometimes, what takes up too much space in our lives isn't something bad — it's something good. Useful. Familiar. Even comforting. But it can still crowd out what's quietly growing beneath.

Maybe there's something fruitful in your life that's waiting for more light — something you haven't noticed because of the noise, the busyness, or the “lemongrass” of good things you're holding on to.

As you read this, I invite you to take some time to clear a little space. And yes I mean this in every sense - actual space in your home, mental/ head space, heart space, even making more room for someone in your life (don't text your ex!), whatever area of your life you feel this applies to in this moment.

You might be surprised at what's been thriving in the background, waiting to be seen, felt, heard and experienced.
